Amfilochia, a serene town located at the northwestern edge of Central Greece, is beautifully nestled along the innermost point of the Ambracian Gulf. Its amphitheatrical layout on the hillside gives visitors stunning panoramic views of the calm, protected waters. The town itself offers a peaceful, authentic Greek atmosphere and is well-suited for travelers who prefer to explore off the beaten path. A walk along the coastal promenade is one of the town’s simplest pleasures, where you can stop at traditional tavernas and cafés serving local seafood delicacies, such as grilled sardines and octopus, freshly caught from the gulf.
One of the highlights of Amfilochia is the view from the upper part of the town, especially near the old fortress ruins of Kastro, which overlooks the harbor and offers an ideal photo opportunity, particularly during sunset. The Church of Agios Athanasios, located near the center, is a notable example of local ecclesiastical architecture and is often at the heart of local celebrations.
Nature lovers will find the surrounding area especially appealing. The Ambracian Gulf itself is an ecological treasure, designated under the Natura 2000 network. Its wetlands, lagoons, and marshes are home to an impressive array of birdlife, including herons, flamingos, and rare pelicans. You can take a scenic drive or organize birdwatching outings toward Louros or near the estuaries of the Arachthos River. These wetlands also support local fishing communities and provide insight into sustainable, traditional ways of life.
Just beyond the town, the surrounding hills are dotted with small villages such as Strongyli, Nea Kerasounta, and Boumplias, where visitors can experience rural Greek culture, taste homemade cheeses and spoon sweets, and enjoy sweeping views of the olive-covered countryside. A visit to these villages offers the opportunity to witness Greek hospitality in its most genuine form.
