Discover the Charm of Ágioi Déka – A Village with Cretan Roots & Timeless Beauty
Nestled on the lush slopes of Mount Galisio (576m), Ágioi Déka is one of Corfu’s most historic and picturesque villages. Its name—meaning “Ten Saints”—comes from the first church founded by Cretan refugees who settled here as early as the 9th century AD, fleeing Arab invasions. The village was officially recorded in 1583 under the name Casal Aghius Dheca, and welcomed another wave of Cretan settlers during the 17th century, during the 5th Venetian–Ottoman War.
Wander through the peaceful streets and you’ll find traditional architecture, timeless stone churches, and panoramic views over the island. Ágioi Déka is a living piece of Corfu’s history, where every corner whispers stories from the past.
Highlights of Ágioi Déka:
The Church of Panagia Odigitria – the village’s main and most prominent church.
The historic Church of the Ten Saints, likely the first in the village, rooted in Cretan tradition.
Other charming chapels, including St. Spyridon, St. Dimitrios, St. Iakovos (the cemetery church), and St. Stylianos, a founder’s church.
The rural chapel of the Ten Saints in the area of Flouveri, perfect for a quiet moment of reflection.
The ruins of the former estate of Saint Catherine of Karofyllatos, echoing the Venetian past.
Mount Galisio, known locally as the mountain of the Ten Saints, home to the Monastery of the Ascension (Pantokrator), first mentioned in 1502 notary records.
The Avgoustis Mansion, an elegant example of Venetian architecture, located next to the Church of St. Panteleimon.
