Northumberland Road played a noteworthy role in one of the most significant events in Irish History – the 1916 Rising Northumberland Road – is also steeped in history as this is where the bloody Battle of Mount Street Bridge took place during the 1916 Rising. It was here on Northumberland Road that one of the historical moments of Ireland’s journey to Independence took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, the 26th of April, 1916. Handfuls of Irish Volunteers were strategically placed in the houses along Northumberland Road, the most notable one being No. 25 Northumberland Road and in buildings close to Mount Street Bridge. There are a few monuments in the area to mark the Irish State.
