Bjarg is your Home Away From Home and is a free standing house with two apartments in a stunning location, with sea and mountain view. When built in the 40´s by a local captain, it was one of the largest houses in the village. The captain and his wife had lodgers and many young couples started living together in one of the rooms there.
Asthildur and Jonni live now in the upper apartment but rent out the small apartment on the lower level with a separate entrance. The only shared space is the laundry room that serves both apartments and is located between them. The whole house is newly renovated. The design and decoration has a lot of attention to detail and our intention is to make you feel at home.
We only have this one place for renting out to guests, and every time we prepare the apartments, we think of it as getting it ready for friends. We know for many of you, the trip to Iceland is a dream come true. It´s a unique adventure and we want Bjarg to be a unique part of your journey.
Asthildur is born and raised in a farm near Grundarfjordur. She has a passion for the nature and likes to go hiking, especially on the mountains around her childhood farm. She also loves to go fishing.
Johann Jon or just Jonni, works as an independent consultant and salmon guide. He has worked as a fisherman on a trawler and boats here in Grundarfjordur. He has passion for music and plays on a guitar in a blues band.
Bjarg was built by his great grandparents so this house has a special place in his heart and many of his relatives was born in it.
Asthildur and Jonni met in Grundarfjordur and got married in the church here 33 years ago.
Grundarfjordur is a village of 900 people, set in a beautiful location by the sea, sheltered by mountains, where Kirkjufell mountain is the best known. At restaurant Bjargarsteinn you will have an unforgettable meal in a stunning setting and a whale watching trip with Laki Tours is a must.
We recommend driving around Snaefellsnes peninsula and exploring the Snaefellsjokull glacier national park. You can go to the Vatnshellir cave and to the summit of the glacier, connecting with both heaven and earth. If you want to hike up there, we recommend GoWest tours. Our favorite café in the area is the small Fjoruhusid, down by the sea at Hellnar.
In Rif there is Frystiklefinn, a super cool theatre run by a young local actor. During summer they have great performances in English based on local history.
It´s really worth spending a day in Stykkisholmur, which is the oldest town of Snaefellsnes. There you can find a few museums, and artists´ workshops. Flatey island in Breidafjordur bay is one of our favorite places on the planet. It´s like going 100 years back in time. Check out trips to Flatey with Seatours who also offer some great boat trips.
