Portici stands on the slopes of the western side of Vesuvius and occupies a small portion of territory along the coast of the Gulf of Naples. It borders to the north with the municipality of San Giorgio a Cremano and with the districts of Naples, San Giovanni a Teduccio and Barra; to the south and east with Herculaneum, while to the west it is washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea. Portici has a small gulf: the Granatello (Ranatiéllo, in Neapolitan). The name derives from the fact that in ancient times, from the Villa di Portici, up to the Convent of Santa Maria, in the eighteenth century, there were many pomegranate plants.
