Montescaglioso is an Italian town of 9,942 inhabitants in the province of Matera in Basilicata. Important historical and cultural center, is known as the "city of the Monasteries" for the presence of four monasteries, among which the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo. The territory of Montescaglioso, as well as that of Matera, lies in an area archaeological, historical and natural, the Park of the Rock Churches of Matera, which includes about 8000 has [17] of which about 3,500 belong to the common montese. The town is part of the upholstered furniture district of Matera-Montescaglioso [18].
Culturally it must mention the Carnival, one of the most important in the region, whose first official statement dates back to 7 February 1638 [19].
