The historic center of Carcare, in the heart of the Val Bormida, is a charming medieval village built on both banks of the Bormida di Pallare river. It developed along the ancient valley road (the historic Via Aemilia Scauri) and is divided in two by the river itself.
🏘️ Features and atmosphere
Proximity to the river: The cobbled streets and architectural views preserve the historic aura of the village, marked by narrow alleys, old stone houses, and small squares.
Urban configuration: The whole appears suspended between history and daily life – just think of the redevelopment projects on via Castellani, where children directly participated by laying colorful mosaics on the stones.
Monuments and places of interest
Church of San Giovanni Battista (1888‑91): In Baroque style, it houses a splendid crucifix by Anton Maria Maragliano and 18th-century frescoes by Giovanni Borgna and Alfredo Luxoro.
Church of Sant’Antonio Abate (1621‑23): Annexed to the former Piarist Fathers’ college, it has a Greek cross layout with a dome, frescoes of the four Evangelists, and Ligurian works from the 18th century.
Piarist complex and Calasanzio high school: Founded in 1621, today it hosts the classical, scientific, and linguistic high school. It played a central cultural role in the valley and preserves a frescoed Aula Magna.
Town hall and castle ruins: The town hall stands where the Del Carretto castle once was; today a few stone traces remain, incorporated into the majestic civic building.
Old Bridge: Crosses the Bormida and connects the two halves of the center; it dates back to the 19th century, built in stone after some landslides.
Other notable places
Historic villas such as Villa Maura (now housing the civic library and Barriliana museum), Villa Fina, Villa Cenni, Villa Bolla, and others from the 19th and early 20th centuries enrich the center with styles ranging from neoclassical to Art Nouveau.
