Suvereto fascinates visitors with its extraordinary historical heritage, starting with the Romanesque parish church of San Giusto, dating from the 9th century and completed in 1189. The perfectly preserved facade is distinguished by a portal decorated with pre-Romanesque motifs and two columns surmounted by lions. The austere and atmospheric interior is illuminated by the soft light filtering through the rose windows and small windows. Not far away is the crenellated gate that leads to the heart of the historic center, while turning right we reach the church of the Madonna di sopra la Porta, built in 1772 thanks to the contribution of the local community. The hill on which Suvereto stands is dominated by the Rocca Aldobrandesca, dating back to the year 1000, and the ancient walls and towers surrounding the village add to the charm of the medieval atmosphere. The 13th-century Palazzo Comunale, famous for its Giudici loggia, and the ancient Convento di San Francesco, with its charming cloister, complete the historic panorama of the village. Also not to be missed are the Church of the Crucifix, built in 1500, and the Upper Gate, an imposing medieval structure.
Suvereto is located in the Livorno hinterland, near the border with the province of Grosseto, and although it is a bit far from the main communication routes, it is still an easily accessible destination. From Florence, for example, it takes just over two hours of travel: take the FI-PI-LI, then enter the A12 and continue on the SS1 Aurelia to Venturina, from which the town is just 10 minutes away. If you start from other Tuscan cities, such as Siena or Arezzo, travel times are longer, over an hour and a half and almost two and a half hours, respectively. Those arriving from the coast, on the other hand, find the fastest route: from Pisa or Livorno, it takes about 70 minutes. In both cases, one drives along the Aurelia southbound and exits at the Venturina junction.
