Squeezed between Mount Civita to the east and Mount Aureo to the west, Atrani extends along the valley of the Dragone river. The two hills form, with their looming over the valley, a "cave" from which the name of Atrani derives [6]. The name of the river, however, is of Greek origin, and indicated the purity of its waters[unclear].[6] The urban territory covers almost the entire territory of the municipality. To the south, the houses were protected from the sea by the Bourbon viaduct; in front of it, now, lies the beach formed thanks to the construction of an artificial reef. The urban fabric rises climbing between the steep slopes of the two mountains, to the east up to the Church of the Maddalena which stands out imposingly against the sea and to the west up to the tunnel that leads to the territory of Amalfi. The houses form a maze of stairways and open spaces, interrupted only by the small square, with the Church of San Salvatore de Birecto and the Moorish style fountain, and by the course that covers the river bed; this urban labyrinth rises up the valley until it gets lost in terraces planted with lemon trees, which are however already the territory of the city of Ravello.
