The historic center of Salerno is the heart of the old city and develops in the maze of medieval alleys from the western end of the city to the Rafastia stream. The settlement has ancient origins dating back to 197 BC when the Romans founded ancient Salernum. It is considered that the approximate limits of the historic center are the Fusandola stream (where there was the so-called “Portacatena”), the beach, the hill of the castle of Arechi (called “Monte Bonadies”) and the old Carmine climb (near “Portanova”). The historic center of Salerno is rich in artisan shops and very suggestive churches among the alleys. The city was formerly divided into four districts: Curtis Dominica, an area where the ancient Lombard court stood. Located between Ortus Magnus and Locus Veterensium, the district was the hub of legal and administrative activities of the Lombard kingdom.
