Nel Cielo was completed in 2013, the last new build within Old Barga. All materials were locally sourced and traditional building methods employed by the small team of artisans and craftsmen. The interior design combines traditional Tuscan features with modern improvements where appropriate. For example in the bathrooms and kitchen, underfloor heating and insulation. The property is situated in Vicolo Nardi, a charming, narrow street which leads up from the tourist information centre to Barga’s Duomo. The street is steeply stepped and cobbled so the house may be reached on foot only, from the top or bottom of the steps which form part of a network of enchanting little streets and alleyways leading from piazza to piazza. The house stands in a high, relatively quiet position in the historical centre and so is light and airy; there are marvellous views from all windows. The guest bedroom opens onto a broad balcony, a wonderful space to relax with a book or just to sit and enjoy the beauty, the peace. Evenings buzz with live music, tantalising food and happy sounds of Italian life, distant yet close, drifting up from the piazzas of this beautiful town.
I moved to Italy from Scotland in 2010, leaving my career in the pharmaceutical industry. A new start. I lived in various mountain villages in this region of northern Tuscany, searching and learning, and then discovered my small building site in Barga's historic centre. Nel Cielo... di Barga grew from here.
I designed, built and project-managed as part of a small team, each dedicated to creating something really special.
The top floor of the house is for guests only and I enjoy having people to stay, looking after people
I love days out walking in the mountains, evenings in the local bar, a meal out from time-to-time in one of Barga's many excellent restaurants. Best of all I love the people here in the Old Town, the music, the life, the tranquility, the vibrancy. It is ever-changing but with a tremendous sense of permanence...
Barga is a leading cultural centre for music and art. It has well-established theatre, opera and jazz communities offering high quality performances year round. The piazzas host live music, markets, food festivals and exhibitions of local arts and crafts. Local bars and restaurants are just 2 minutes’ walk from the house. Free parking is 5-10 minutes’ walk from the house in a choice of public car parks outside Old Barga’s walls.
