The well-fenced property is situated 45 minutes from the airport and 8 minutes to the beach. There is also a garden with tropical fruit trees such as mangoes, attes, bananas, coconuts, sapotte maigrot(only to a survey of Ministry of Agriculture, there is only 12 trees in Mauritius). "Trou d'Eau Douce" (which means a hole with fresh water) is a crater lake fed by underground rivers, in which can be found aquatic animals(fishes, eels, prawn...), is partly surrounded by "Badamier" trees of more than 200 years old. It understood that long time ago, first the Dutch were living around this lake for it being a good hiding place against pirate and of its easy access to fresh water. Upon the departure of the Dutch, the French occupied that place for the same reasons. That lake, a private property, forming part of 18 acres of land belong to Auberge Etiennette. We often bring guests to visit this lake for its natural appeal as it is a 10 minute walk from our Auberge. The landscape around the lake, has a breath-taking view of the sea and Margenie island which is in front of Ile Aux Cerfs.
I am the owner of Auberge Etiennette and have been living in Trou d'Eau Douce since 1976 previous living in the city of Beau Bassin/RoseHill. I am one of the first people renting studio to tourists and at the same time bringing them on excursions around the island. Prior my retirement, I was working in the Ministry of Agriculture as a vet surgeon as a result of my work, I attended small breeders around the island thus I have a profound knowledge of the island. I like to take care of my sugarcane plantation and vegetables. I also enjoy discussions regarding the mysteries of the universe. My main hobbies is to visit the capital city of Mauritius, namely Port Louis, especially the market place which has been built by the French. The market place remind me of the first arrival of the French in Mauritius. I also enjoy Port Louis as it has many landmarks of the settlers who came to Mauritius.
The neighbourhood has kept its rural aspect and is a nice and friendly place to stay. Nearby there are several supermarkets and cheap restaurants based on European, Chinese, Indian and Creole cuisine; and a post office. There is also an old sugar mill in the surrounding area. We recommend Bateaux Vicky for easy access to Ile Aux Cerfs which is a beautiful tourist's site, at a preferential price for our guests only, inclusive of excursions and lunch.
