Oaxaca The Historic Center of Oaxaca, a city founded in 1529, is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved in Mexico. The city, with its harmonious grid layout, is an excellent example of colonial-era settlements. Considered a World Heritage Site, Oaxaca is home to some 1,200 historical monuments of various kinds that reflect the city's evolution from the 16th to the early 20th century. It features important religious buildings such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption; the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude; the Former Convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán—which houses the Museum of Oaxacan Cultures, the Historic Ethnobotanical Garden, and the Fray Francisco de Burgoa Library; the Temple of San Felipe Neri; the Temple of San Juan de Dios; and the Former Convent of Santa Catarina de Siena, the second monastery in New Spain. Other notable monuments include the Temple of Our Lady of the Snows, with an important collection of sacred art; the Temple of La Merced, the Temple and Former Convent of Carmen Alto; the Temple of the Precious Blood of Christ, and the Temple of San Cosme y Damián. Oaxaca also has a considerable number of cultural spaces, such as the Santo Domingo Cultural Center, the Macedonio Alcalá Theater; the Rufino Tamayo Museum of Pre-Hispanic Art; the House of Juáez Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Oaxaca Institute of Graphic Arts, the Museum of Philately, and the Oaxaca Textile Museum. Other sites of interest include the Arches of Xochimilco, the Benito Juárez market (for handicrafts) and the 20th of November market (for food). The Lunes del Cerro, or Guelaguetza, festival is celebrated annually on Cerro del Fortín.
