About this property

Düsternbrook Safari Guest Farm is the oldest guest farm in Namibia. The charming colonial farmhouse has a terrace with panorama views overlooking a dry river bed. The farm has an outdoor pool, a bar, and a traditional lapa area. Free WiFi is provided in the public areas and some rooms. All individually decorated rooms include a private bathroom, power outlets with USB ports and a terrace. Some rooms have air conditioning and a panoramic view of the riverbed. Other accommodation options include Luxury tents with a natural stone en suite bathroom. For nature lovers, the rustic-style chalets are situated 3-5 km away from the guest farm at the dam or water place. Düsternbrook's restaurant serves home-style European cuisine prepared from local products. A buffet breakfast is prepared daily featuring homemade breads and jams. Dinner is served in the traditional open Lapa area during the summer months or in the farmhouse by an open fireplace during winter. Guests booking at Duesternbrook Guestfarm can enjoy the following activities: cheetah and leopard drives, organised safari drives, scenic early mountain drive or horse riding: riding lessons, sundowner ride, breakfast ride or an overnight ride to a shelter. Furthermore there are several short distance trails from 1 hr to 5 hr, weekend trails or long distance trails over several days ( 4 or 6 days). Windhoek is 50 km away by car and Okahandja is a 70 km drive away. A shuttle to Windhoek Kosea Kutako International Airport, 90 km way, is available.

Company information

I am born Namibian, grew up on this farm and I know every corner of it. I have done my schooling in Namibia, went to Europe ( Germany ) where I have done an apprenticeship as electrician and afterwards I studied electrical engineering and wrote a thesis in France. Afterwards I worked for Siemens in the process automation industry before I returned home to Namibia in 1982. Since I returned I lived and worked on this farm.Based on the foundation of my parents and adapting to modern time and circumstances I tried to develop the farm to what it is today. Example: the farm was a cattle ranch and the guest farm was a side line. My vision for the future and passion for wildlife convinced me to transform the farm into game ranch. Game I think is much more adapted to nature and its draughts than domestic animals. Overnight tourism with wildlife adventure is our the main income. The two main reason for that decision was 1. tourism is less dependent on rain ( Namibia has often draughts) and 2. wildlife is no mono-culture and more adapted to the harsh environment and uses less water than cattle. So after a few 'test" years I stoped cattle farming altogether and kept on developing the game and tourism part. Judging by the development of last years I am happy that I think my decision was correct. Further more: This guestfarm/lodge type of operation offers more jobs and more skilled jobs than any average farm operation. With more beds our little community grew more than the previous domestic farm operation 30 years ago. I think with the dedicated input from all, I can say we have reached a level of fair income based on a win-win deal: competence, friendliness and good service on the one side, resulting in happy guests thereby securing the job, lifestyle, education and enough income for total farm maintenance and management financial back-up to secure a relativ and hopefully good future prospect. Sudden Corona experience showed and convinced me we are on the right track.

MOST IMPORTANT: How to get here? ON Highway B1/A1 TAKE EXIT D1499. Google Maps is wrong! It is NOT D1474. TAKE EXIT from A1 OKAPUKA / D1499. Once you reach top of bridge/flyover you see a brown signboard "Duesternbrook". Coming from Windhoek turn left, coming from Okahandja turn right. Düsternbrook Safari Guest Farm, is a small family run guest farm. It is the first Guest farm in Namibia, since 1962. It is 50 km from Windhoek and 90 km from the international airport,HKIA. We are open year-round. Our clients are mostly self-drive or individual travelers ( no big busses) for overnight guests, day visitors are welcome. We offer attractive, varied, and interesting combination of different activities. These are: a game drive including Hippo, Giraffe and many (15) more animals to see, an scenic early mountain drive, horse riding, Sky unlimited is a special game drive ending at an exceptional 360 degrees view point on top a mountain and a sundowner. WE have several walking trails. All activities have the same price except horse riding and Sky Unlimited. The use of walking trails are included in the price. You can do DBB and all activities in one day ( module system). On the Hippo/leopard drives you can take very good photos. Please enjoy our new luxury extension ,11km from the main farmhouse, called Point of View. It has only 3 luxury double rooms with air-condition and beautiful view in pristine nature. It has its own restaurant and dinner (own chef)/ breakfast is taken in a unique thatch-roofed big dining room, lounge, fireplace and bar. It has an animal water spot and an infinity pool. Advice: 2 nights to relax and enjoy more at beginning or end of stay. On our Safari Guestfarm ( Lodge) we have an abundant diversity of wildlife, such as Hippo, seldom Sable antelope, Giraffe, Oryx, big Kudu, Impala, Steenbok, Cape eland, Waterbuck, Hartmann Mountain and Burchell plains Zebra, Ostrich, blue Wildebeest and very seldom Cheetah and Leopard in the wild.

Neighbourhood information

Düsternbrook Farm 14 000 ha is only 50 km from Windhoek for shopping or 90 km from the international airport HKIA. The farm lies at foot and reaches into Khomas Hochland mountain range north-west of Windhoek. The Khomas Hochland mountain range is a bit of a secret. You do not find to much in the official literature but if you have a closer look it is one of the most species rich area in Namibia. Example: mountains offer much more niches than any plain country as you find here Klipspringer, Rock Dassie or the Hartman mountain zebra, apart from birds and reptiles like the Tamara rock agama all have their specific niches and only here. The farm lies on 1300 m and because of its hight it is regarded as a malaria free area. Our highest mountain on the farm is 1850 m. Our neighboring farmers are mainly cattle farmers. We have a good understanding and created in 2015 a long distance hiking trail 100 km ( 6 days) and 54 km ( 4 days) over several farms. We had our first hiking groups in 2016 and we get very good feed back. Feed back say we are of the top 10 hiking trails in southern Africa, if not the top 5. This is a new attraction to Namibia and the hiking world. On the farm we also have walking and weekend trails.
