Peace and Quiet. In our atmospheric ecological Shepherd's hut you can enjoy the Ruinen forestry in the front garden and the Dwingelderveld in the backyard is a 10-minute bike ride away. Your accommodation has 2 comfortable beds, a shower and compost toilet and a kitchenette with a fridge and no WiFi. From your raised terrace you have a view over the fields where you can watch the sun go down while enjoying a glass of wine. From the edge of our yard with its own entrance, you can discover Ruinen. Your Shepherd's hut is sustainable, ecological and almost off-grid, but equipped with all conveniences. You reach your stay over a Drenths bolder path. It stands on the edge of our plot. In the morning you might spot a few deer, the squirrel in the bush next to you and the swallows soaring over the fields. The residence is built of sustainable materials and well insulated. The water used is purified through a reed filter and feeds the fruit trees. You have two beds, which you can turn into sofas during the day, an attractive wood stove, and also electric heating (Solar panels on the main house will make up for that). French doors give you access to a lovely terrace from which you can watch nature pass by. The Shepherd's hut is located on the outskirts of Ruinen. There is a lot of nature around the hut. For shops, you have to cycle/drive a bit. There is free parking in front of the door and you have your own guest parking space in the driveway. Accessibility by public transport is not optimal. The nearest bus stop is a 30-minute walk.
Hi, I'm Katja, married to Ton. We started hosting in 2021, actually by accident. Well, by accident. Ton had built a beautiful home office for me on a cart belonging to the sheepherder from Havelte when I said... you could turn it into a B&B, it looks so nice... yes, end of the story... lost a home office... Airbnb was born. And we like it!
We love: Being creative, working with our hands, our 'Charlie and his chooksters', our young border 'Dozer' (who is also a real Dozer), nature, we love the birds, we love to please others and we love Permaculture and self-sufficient living. We have done our Permaculture training in Austria (Sepp Holzer) and Australia (Geoff Lawton) and are now creating our place (Ton). The Shepherd's hut is located in a large Permaculture garden, so don't expect raked beds. Our garden is not tidy by adult standards, but it is natural and bursting with life :-). Enough partying in the brewery in the garden. Almost everything that happens on our premises happens for a reason. We try to make everything in the garden edible. We also keep water on-site for as long as possible, which you also see in the Shepherd's hut with its helophyte filter that opens onto a wadi.
And we like it when others enjoy this too.
The Heerlijckheid Ruinen honors its name for a reason. Cycling and walking can be maintained here for days with heathland, forests and fens within walking distance. You can cycle extensively in the Dwingelerveld and for day trips, the Drenths Frisian forest and the heaths in Havelte are also easily accessible. Along the way you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and lunch at various places. But you can also have lunch, brunch or dinner within walking distance.
Drenthe is pre-eminently the province for cycling and walking shoes. In the woods opposite your residence there are various walking routes and beautiful cycling paths. But the Dwingelerveld is also ideal for a day of natural enjoyment. You can also let your car have a well deserved rest on our site. ;-)
