Totara Hut is a cosy self-contained studio unit with everything you need to enjoy a comfortable break while being surrounded by nature. Power is connected to this site, and natural mineral well water straight from the tap is safe to drink, with no chlorine added. Parking is directly outside the hut.
Cooking is done outside on the BBQ, relax on the generous covered deck and enjoy the view.
We practice sustainable ethos and where possible we reduce, reuse and recycle as much as we can. Our toilet is composting, reducing water consumption. The Green Loo’s waste is turned into compost and put back on the land after it is broken down, returning to nature what we borrowed from it.
All our walkways are private and for paying guests only while staying at Glenwood. We recommend taking the time to explore Glenwood and provide a map of the walkways and property in your hut. Take a look at our other hut - Kanuka for an off-grid eco-friendly option.
We purchased Glenwood late in 2015 as a retirement project with the intention of restoring the old homestead, whare, and school building to retain the property's rich history. Passionate about protecting and regenerating the surrounding native bush we placed a large portion of Glenwood under QEII Trust Covenant in 2018 – a lifetime covenant is our way of protecting this beautiful land. We live on-site with our much-loved Labrador dogs.
Our proximity to the Hinewai Reserve and Purple Peak Curry Tracks are to be appreciated. Dr Hugh Wilson has been instrumental in his passion for the conservation of the flora and fauna on Banks Peninsula.
Akaroa township is a 5-minute drive back down Grehan Valley and you can enjoy the many cafes, eateries, and boutique shops it has to offer. Enjoy the local weekend farmers markets or take a trip out on the harbour to see the Hectors Dolphins.
