From Solbacka, the Alvar stretches eastward as far as the eye can see. The limestone-based plateau covers much of southern Öland and offers an open, austere landscape with thin soil and a unique flora and fauna. Animals graze freely, rare plants thrive, and birdlife is rich. The Alvar is part of the World Heritage Site “The Agricultural Landscape of Southern Öland” and provides an exceptional nature experience. To the west lies the sea and the Kalmar Strait, with the mainland in the distance. The area around Solbacka invites walks and discoveries. Just a few meters to the north is Mysinge Hög, Öland’s highest point, with a brilliant view. Around the house there is a large lawn with apple, pear, and plum trees. Wild rabbits hop about, butterflies dance, and birds sing. Icelandic horses pass over the Alvar daily, reinforcing the idyllic feeling. When you step inside, you’re greeted by a charming glass veranda and a welcoming hall. From here you can enter the master bedroom or continue to the living room, and from there into the kitchen with a view over the Alvar. The morning sun pours in from the east through the kitchen window, and the evening sun warms the living room and veranda facing the sea. Breakfast can be enjoyed with a view of the water, and the evening offers magical sunsets. Upstairs there are two bedrooms—one right by the stairs and another further in. From the hall, a hatch leads down to the large cellar, once used as a food store. The house has an incineration toilet and its own well with fresh Öland drinking water. If you ever want access to a modern bathroom or a shower, you can use the facilities down at the farm across the road. There you can also drop off food scraps, feed the pigs, and visit the other animals. Solbacka is a place for peace and relaxation—where you can enjoy Öland’s nature and experience genuine rural life up close.
