After a year of dire straits years ago, I was blest enough to acquire this house that gave me the long-sought-after respite I had been searching for as well as the opportunity to have roommates to live with. I loved living with people, & this house had ample place for others to nestle into, giving me years of fulfillment & joy that I could provide a welcoming home not just for myself but also for others. I feel privileged to have my place in the generations of owners who have put their mark on this 1893 home, & I continue to find satisfaction hosting others, hoping to convey the same comfort & oasis to all my guests that this house has been for me.
This house sits on the edge of urban Denver with the calm & quiet of an enclosed natural space, giving it the best of both worlds. There is also a variety of custom-crafted woodwork throughout the house, most notably on the dramatic staircase, with drawers & cubbies built into the stairs & where you can see Bailey, a decorative handrail brace in the shape of a little boy, named after the grandson of the craftsman. A large original window presents at the front of the house with stained glass decor, iconic of historic local architecture.
The historic Sunnyside neighborhood has gone through dramatic changes over the years, notably being the Italian district decades ago, followed by being a center of gang violence in the 1980-90s, & eventually transitioning to an upscale, modest neighborhood with unique architecture & warm, walkable atmosphere. The neighborhood showcases parks featuring mature trees, open spaces, & playground equipment. The neighborhood is easy to navigate on the grid system with south to north streets named in ascending order & east to west streets named in alphabetical order. Back alleys are present throughout to ease accessibility & relieve parking traffic. (During the height of the pandemic, the host & her roommates enjoyed "back alley tours," walking from alley to alley to explore the neighborhood from behind the scenes!) The neighborhood is tucked in the southwest corner of I-25 & I-70 & is immediately north of the charming LoHi & Highland districts of Denver, where even more restaurants & vibrant nightlife can be found. With the walkability of the neighborhood & walking paths under I-25 to downtown Denver, city life is easily accessible on foot, bike, or mobile scooter.
