Second largest tree in Georgia only a few miles from the lodge.
You may have heard about people hiking to see the Gennett Poplar tree in Gilmer County and
wondered, why the fuss over a tree? This poplar tree is the second largest tree in Georgia and
has a circumference of 18 ft. at the base. It is an impressive tree for sure. It’s named for the
Gennett family who owned a local lumber mill and who sold this land to the Forestry Service.
The road to this arboreal wonder is just off of Gates Chapel Road. Once you leave Gates Chapel
and turn onto Forest Road 241 the driving conditions change considerably. The first ten feet of
the road is pretty rough, and a low clearance car would have difficulty in this spot. The single
lane dirt road is long and rather winding, but don’t worry, you’ll get to your destination without
too much trouble. Bear Creek trail is a 9-mile loop, but you reach the poplar tree after 8/10ths of
a mile. The trail runs alongside Bear Creek, which has lots of rushing water and small waterfalls.
Moss and wild rhododendrons cover the landscape around the trail leading to the popular
poplar, creating a scenic view to your moderate hike. Dogs on leashes are welcome on the trail
as well.
