The condo is located in West Oakland, a historically working class neighborhood filled with industrial warehouses, beautiful ornate victorians, and new condo developments. Like any up-and-coming area in a major city, the surroundings can be dirty at times and there can be incidents of crime. Common sense is always encouraged, not just in Oakland, but all major cities like SF; do not leave valuables in your car, if your car has a trunk, leave the seats folded down to show the trunk is empty, pay attention to your surroundings and don't be distracted on your phone.
Several of the surrounding warehouses now serve as artist studios. Most notably the former facilities for American Steel are now a unique facility for large-scale artists, many part of the Burning Man community. Several pieces of work by the constituent art groups within can be found on display outside the complex. Mandela Gateway, a mixed retail and residential development at the south end of Mandela Parkway, surrounds the West Oakland BART station. The old Victorian houses are being refurbished, and new condominium, townhouse, and live-work loft residences have sprung up. West Oakland's proximity to Emeryville, Berkeley, and San Francisco via the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge and BART, make the neighborhood a central location with warmer weather than San Francisco.
Within walking distance there is a lively farmer's market every Sunday morning at Peralta and 18th St. Kowbird fried chicken by acclaimed pitmaster and chef Matt Horn is at Peralta and 18th St. His other restaurant, Horn, is located at Mandela Parkway and 26th St, if barbecue is more you thing. Kilovolt coffee is on Mandela near 18th St. There is rock climbing in the old Pacific Pipe warehouse located at Mandela Parkway and West Grand. The West Oakland BART station is about an 11-15 minute walk from the condo.
