Our balcony was spectacular. It must be one of the best in Rome. It was also on a quiet side street, just far enough from the crowds. The breakfast was much better than I expected.

Castel Sant'Angelo

This building has plenty of stories to tell. Originally built in the 2nd century AD as a mausoleum for the great emperor Hadrian, it didn’t take long to be converted into a military fortress. It was even connected to the Vatican City by an underground tunnel, a feature that came in handy for Pope Clement VII when Rome was being sacked by rebellious troops. Nowadays, this distinctive round chameleon of a building is a military museum.

We walked down from Vatican city to here.

We walked down from Vatican city to here. Steeped in history and another ancient monument, it was one of those less visited sights. We hadn't booked and were able to get in without queuing (early September). Interesting historical place, not somewhere with lots of art work like other places, more of a ruins like the coloseum.

We arrived at 630 and they announced it will close at 7, so I waited downstairs as I wouldn't be fast enough to go up. There was no mention that there was a lift to go up and it didn't close at 7! It took us ages to go there and I missed out because of this. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Staff were not helpful at all, and rather rude.

Interesting, good value, well written information sheets to describe what is in various places/rooms. Loved the stories about fireworks and where Roman candles came from, loved the models of the Castel at various ages and stages, lovely painted ceilings and frescoes. Wonderful views from high up via a slope an easy stairs (also a lift for those that needed it). Perhaps my favourite place.

I wasn't aware of this place until I started researching Rome. When I learned that it used to be the Mausoleum of the Emperor Hadrian, I knew I had to see it for myself. Under the Popes, this unassuming place became a castle for the Popes to escape marauding armies, then a barracks, and finally a museum. There is much to see here, not least the ancient siege weapons (how often will you see a catapult just sitting around?) The further up you climb, the more you will see. There is a cafe with shaded tables, but if you persevere and get all the way to the top, you will be rewarded with incredible views of Rome. Highly recommended.

A good attraction, lots of fabulous views from the top of the castle. Staff however, unhelpful. Had to walk round the entire castle twice to go to the toilet before leaving as staff would not allow you to cross the rope at the entrance to go to the toilet next to the entrance. Didn't make a lot of sense to me as it was very quiet and no one about, no one in the queue at entrance.
