    Gandantegchenlin ⛩️ ⠀

    Gandantegchenlin ⛩️ ⠀ Let's be real, there are not many architectural sights in Mongolia as locals have always been nomads, who didn't see the need of building anything and only Buddhist monks could afford to live a settled life. It is not surprising that they became the founders of Ulaanbaatar, but about the city itself a little later. 😉 ⠀ So, Gandan Tegchinlin Khiid (Gandan for short) is the largest Buddhist monastery of 1835, or rather even a network of temples, which are currently inhabited by more than 150 monks. It is active, but some buildings are under construction, so we managed to get into only a few. The main monastery houses the famous 26-meter statue of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, the lord who mercifully looks upon beings, but I only saw it in a photo. 🛕 It is interesting that at the beginning of the 20th century, about 14 thousand monks lived on the territory of the monastery, which became the most important center of Buddhist education in Mongolia. By the way, from 1944 to 1990, Gandan was the only active place of worship in socialist Mongolia. Now, Gandantegchenlin houses the Buddhist University, the largest institution of religious education in Mongolia. ☝️ ⠀ I am very attracted to being in such places not only from the point of view of enjoying the architecture, but also in terms of searching for Zen. I will deffinetely like this place as I did!
