Warm welcome from our hosts, nothing was too much trouble. Great location within walking distance to snow monkey park and local town. Well appointed and spacious villa. Excellent breakfast and dinner, the latter was in the form of a tasting menu so had the opportunity to explore Japanese cuisine that we wouldn't normally opt for. On our second night we had the place to ourselves so it felt very special.

The lounge is absolutely the highlight, here the Grand Phenix shares three things with you: great local draft beer, a gentle Okushiga snowing view, and a warm firepit. This lounge is so special that you can wait for your dinner table (because of the tight reservation in Christmas season) there while drinking your drinks by a bonfire, this even makes waiting a wonderful experience...

Where do I even start — this was our favourite stay in Japan! We originally booked for two nights but ended up extending our stay after a typhoon warning was issued for our next destination. The staff were incredibly accommodating, helping us weigh our options and moving us into another available room for the extra nights, ensuring that breakfast and dinner were included. Our host, Hinata, was absolutely wonderful. She spoke clear English and went over every detail of our stay — from cleaning times to meal preferences — with such care and professionalism. She was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely made us feel at home. The rooms are incredibly spacious, with soft, cosy beds, including a TV with Netflix and Disney! Making it easy to spend the day inside doing nothing! The food was exceptional — comparable to a fine Australian degustation that would easily cost hundreds back home. One night, we were even treated to dinner at their sister restaurant down the road, where we enjoyed delicious Wagyu steak, complete with pick-up and drop-off service. There were also snacks and alcoholic drinks available for purchase, plus a daily happy hour from 2–5pm. The private onsens, both in-room and in the public facility, were perfect for unwinding — with free Yakult on hand as a thoughtful touch. They also offered complimentary pick-up and drop-off at the local bus stop for both arrival and departure, which made everything so seamless. It was the perfect escape from the bustle of Tokyo — relaxing, memorable, and truly special. I can’t wait to return!

Just wow, beautiful location, amazing food, the staff were lovely. Not sure you could find anything more traditional. A really awe inspiring experience. The onsen was soo beautiful. A shame that the men get the most time in the Momoyama section as it is jaw droppingly beautiful and would be so cool to watch the day break from there. Great that you can take photos in the morning before you depart. So atmospheric at night. Not touristy at all and full of locals. Scrub up on your Japanese before you go!

We had a great stay at Shoraiso for our honeymoon in December. Service is unparalleled and the staff are doing above and beyond to make us feel like home without being intrusive. We love the elephant decor of the room and the beautifully landscaped garden, and the private onsen is definitely the highlight of our trip. Breakfast and dinner are included and the food is just exceptional (very tasty with fresh local ingredient and creative presentation). The location is quite convenient - 45min train from Nagano to Yudanaka station and hotel is just a few min drive away (the hotel can arrange pick up). Monkey park is quite close (around 15min taxi away). Overall we couldn’t recommend this hotel more!
