A shame that the men get the most time in the Momoyama section as it is jaw droppingly beautiful and would be so cool to watch the day break from there. Great that you can take photos in the morning before you depart. So atmospheric at night. Not touristy at all and full of locals. Scrub up on your Japanese before you go!

Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi
Located in the Shibu hot-spring area, Onyado Hishiya Torazo features Japanese-style accommodations. Guests can soak in the indoor and outdoor hot-spring baths and female guests can enjoy wearing colourful Japanese Yukata robes. Yudanaka Train Station is a 10-minute drive away and free Wi-Fi is available in the shared lounge. As a tourist, this is as close as you can get to living as part of a Japanese family, and in a historic 400 year old house to boot. You enter to the warmest welcome in English from the owner and manager Torazo, who settles you in and then provides help and advice through the stay from his post behind reception. He encourages you to make the yukata and kimono they provide for free as your go-to clothes around the inn and indeed the town - a great touch, even if we didn't go as far as donning the wooden slippers outside! We'd chosen half board, and this was our favourite bit out of all the positives of this inn - served in your own screened dining room around a low table. Every meal had about a dozen small but involved dishes, a lot of the ingredients which we had difficulty identifying but which were almost without exception memorably delicious. It was fun trying all sorts of dishes you'd never know to order, and we ended each meal nicely full. The inn itself is a delight, timeless with ancient polished wood beams, tight woven matting, sliding screens. We'd chosen a room with futons, which had a small entrance area having a basin at one end and toilet behind a door at the other, and then the main room behind another sliding door. The beds were large and comfortable, and piled with thick blankets, glorious to nest under. Two heaters in the room kept it toasty even when it hit -13⁰ outside with snow. Each afternoon we retired for a luxurious snooze, how could we not. Downstairs at the back of the inn are the two indoor onsen (small hot spring spas). This area decorated with beautiful light wooden panelling, and leads to the fairytale garden. A stone bridge curves over a brook, the path taking you past the classic Japanese evergreens to an entrance hung with blinds. Here is the outdoor onsen, the only one in Yamanochi - and it is yours to enjoy privately. We sat in the pool with the steam rising and the snow falling on us, and marvelled.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. A delightful little town. This ryokan has its own private onsens. We didn't have to book and could use any onsen privately if it was vacant. A great way for people who are anxious about shared bath houses to enjoy this experience. Breakfast (traditional Japanese and western) was so delicious. A beautiful serene experience. 10/10 recommend.
Super friendly staff, explained everything and is always around. Rooms are japanese style and very spacious. Excellent dinner and brekkie. The private Onsen is also nice and cozy. We liked the typical atmospher of the small Ryokan.
Excellent hotel! We booked a room with a private onsen and had an amazing time soaking in the warm hot spring water :) The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, and even helped us to get to the Snow Monkey Park on our first day there. The breakfast and dinner service was also a real feast! We loved every minute and hope we can come back one day :)
traditional japanese ryokan, excellent private outdoor onsen, very helpfull english speaking owner, excellent location - old fashioned Onsen part of Japan, not crowded /beggining of may-probably off season/
Staying in a 400 year old Ryokan was a unique experience We loved the private Onsens The food was amazing!
Beautiful boutique-feeling ryokan with really wonderful staff. We celebrated two birthdays and I was able to coordinate the delicious cakes over email. They even helped us take a photo and printed it out so we all had a little souvenir <3 So thoughtful! The rooms and building were lovely, as was the outdoor onsen. We did the private onsen experience too which was a little extra, but worth it especially to spend time with a partner. Food was tasty and yukatas were very pretty. Felt like a little dream.
Very traditional Ryokan in a genuine onsen hot spring town. The hosts go above and beyond and are ever so friendly. Larger than the average Japanese room and also very comfortable beds ( much as we like the traditional mats it was good to have a break )
It was very clean, quiet and comfortable. Especially the hot spring (onsen) was amazing. You can book it for 30 min (for free) to enjoy a bath in private. The staff member are VERY polite and kind! And wow, what a service.
1. The location is in the middle of Shibu Onsen 2. Under 10 mins from Yudanaka Station by car 3. Easy access to public buses to Jigokudani and Shiga Kogen 4. The ryokan itself is very comfortable and big for a ryokan. It’s public bath is spacious and very clean. It also has several private Onsen rooms for booking. The private dining is excellent. The public areas has free computers and internet as well as complimentary hot beverages. There is even a souvenir corner with fresh seasonal fruits for purchase.
The ryokan is very clean and tidy, there are two private onsens available to use, and the kaiseki was delicious. The owners are also very friendly and helpful, offered to pick us up from Yudanaka Station and drop us off at the Snow Monkey Park.
