Outdoor Pursuits Amid Picturesque Nature
A tranquil region of meandering rivers, lush hills and picturesque towns, the Belgium Ardennes is mainly covered in forest and is an outdoor pursuits haven.
Most Belgian Ardennes hotels on Booking.com are in stately Spa, a cold spring town after which all spa towns are named. It also has many casinos and is near the legendary Spa-Francorchamps race track, host of the F1 Belgian Grand Prix.
Durbuy claims to be the world’s smallest town, and its cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and topiary park are certainly worth visiting. On the Ourthe River, this quaint town has a castle and several luxury Ardennes hotels. Also on the Ourthe, popular La Roche-en-Ardenne has a medieval castle overlooking the riverside town. To the east, Vielsalm is by a peaceful lake in the Ardennes mountains, while Rochefort is famous for its Trappist monastery and brewery.
Further south Bastogne has poignant reminders of its place in World War II, most notably the Battle of the Bulge. It is close to the Luxembourg border, as is Arlon, home to an excellent archaeological museum.
Close to France is beautiful Bouillon, whose castle overlooks the town sweeping around a U-shaped bend of the Lemois River. On the Meuse River is Dinant, spectacularly situated at the foot of a rock topped with a castle.

We picked a cheaper remote hotel expecting the average. When we arrived we found an upmarket historic property situated just outside a quaint village and set beside the most amazing stream. After settling into our comfortable room we went down to the the beautiful lounge area beside a stone fire place. Outside the sounds of the stream set a magic environment to enjoy a glass of local red wine and cheese. We then went to the restaurant where we enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak and vegetables, with fresh salad and hot crisp chips. Perfect. So good was our stay we decided to book and additional night. A big group of us (almost 100 people) came over from Ireland, and the staff were nothing short of amazing the whole weekend. They had endless patience for us running around (and let’s be honest, drunk most of the time!) and always handled everything with such good humour. The rooms were great value – comfy beds, lovely bathrooms with fantastic showers, and our room had a beautiful view over an orchard with donkeys, which was such a treat to wake up to. But the real highlight was the staff. They made us feel so welcome and were genuinely kind, fun, and accommodating the whole time. Breakfast is amazing, you get a basket of breads and croissants plus a lot of other options, including local apple juice and jam. A little gem of Ardennes with little streets peppered with fancy bars, restaurants and shops. Good both for a one-day trip and for a longer stay. Nice nature around, and a paradise for kayaking. The castle was amazing - we spent several hours there and loved the falconry display - saw two displays which were different. We stayed at the apartment so that we could access the race track. It’s a 10 minute walk into the circuit. The location was perfect, very smartly designed and finished and completely spotless. I have never stayed anywhere so well prepared and when we arrived after a long drive from the UK we were delighted to find some home made cake, some cold beers in the fridge and some essentials just to get us settled in. a must do tourist thing, but Durbuy can be seen in 1 hour as it's that small. Do sit down on a terras and enjoy one of the local beers, do a hike to the viewing point using the small stairs hidden behind the hotels in the main street.
