We arrived a little later than we expected, after a perilously foggy taxi ride through the mountains, and figured we missed dinner. When we got there, they asked if we were hungry and immediately had food for us. We were both starving by that time so it was greatly appreciated. The food was excellent, authentic and very filling. While we were sitting at the table, I was admiring some of the artwork, and the owner told me he painted it himself. We went over to his little workshop table and bought a few paintings of the lake and the mountains. They already had a fire going in the room for us since it was a little cold that night. The room was cozy and warm by the time we got there. They also helped us with directions to the bus station and the bus schedule the next morning after we hiked down to the lake and back. The location was very close to the lake. We were able to walk to the beginning of the hike with no problem. Adrien provided an abundance of information about the local culture and volcanos, and organized a day trip to Cotopaxi with a local guide. The lodge is also a fully functioning farm with pigs, llamas, goats, chickens, horses, and most endearing to us, dogs. Anouk was always waiting for us in the doorway to throw the latest piece of wood she had found. The bed we slept in was very comfortable with a heated blanket and an additional heater in the room. There was a firepit in our room that we regrettably didn't end up using, but it's there for those who enjoy fireside relaxation. The only reason to stay here was to get an early bus to the Quilotoa loop. Walked round and there were zero attractions to visit. The Princessa Tia Hotel is the place to stay in Quilatoa, best location, great breakfast, large room and bathroom, very clean and comfortable bed. But the best feature is the rooms all have an electric heater. Quilatoa is cold, so the benefit of the heater, which is rare to find anywhere in Ecuador, is amazing! The rim hike is beautiful but steep and slippery in places. Poles would be a good idea. The hike down to the lake is surprisingly long, steep and slippery. There are horses or mules that can take you back up for $10 pp. Get out early as the fog moves in around 4pm and obscures visibility of the lake. The sun in the morning makes the water’s colors amazing. You can take a kayak out or go for a motorized ride in a zodiac. The town is tiny and closes up early so don’t delay going to dinner. There are no pharmacies or banks and only 1 ATM which wouldn’t work with our card. Also, be careful because there are no gas stations for the entire Quilatoa Loop.
