The town centre is very compact so many of the main attractions are in easy walking distance. We came for the Mercury Awards 2025 and had a great evening with a lovely, good natured local audience. I can also recommend the Newcastle City Guide Walking Tour https://newcastlegateshead.com/newcastle-city-guidesGuest review byMarieUnited Kingdom - 10

I was there for business, it was a lovely place to visit, so close to Newcastle and the surrounding areas. Wish I could have stayed longer to do some more exploring. The roads were quiet, and the area was clean. Loved the Angel of the NorthGuest review byChristopherUnited Kingdom - 6.0

Not somewhere I will rush back to, other than the seafront it felt very tired, it has seen better days, I would recommend that you keep going until your reach Tynemouth which has a much nicer feel to it.Guest review byAdrianUnited Kingdom - 8.0

People in South Shield is very friendly and I have good experiences. The building and architechture is interesting. We love Chinese food at Phoenix restaurant in China town Newcastle and Frozen Yogurt in Grainger Market. Take away from Crown of India are fantastic food on Ocean Road. There are free 3 hours parking which is very helpful and convenient for tourists. My daughter said that there are load of children entertainment in order of fun things for children are Life Science Museum more fun than Hancock museum. She like Liang Museum so much.Guest review bySopitUnited Kingdom - 6.0

I would have liked to have given a better review but unfortunately we had an issue with a faulty oven & hob. Although the electrician attended he was unable to rectify the issue concluding a new oven was required. This left us with only the hob which also tripped out if using more than one ring. Gordon offered us a full refund if we booked out after one night. However this was not acceptable as we had events planned for Saturday. Also, as we had planned to self cater we had bought in food which was wasted and we had to dine out with unexpected expenditure. i.e Friday evening & Saturday evening. Gordon offered a reduction of £100.00 which we thought reasonable, & accepted. We appreciate Gordon would have no control over the oven issue & being weekend there was little that could be achieved until working weekday.Guest review byMalcolm johnUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Nice hotel right on the coast at Tynemouth, near Cullercoats. A short walk to the lovely village at Tynemouth and alternatively in the other direction to Whitley Bay. Good restaurant and breakfast served daily sets you up for the day. Good choice if this is the area you seek to visit.Guest review bySandraUnited States - 8.0
We knew abought Houghton le Spring already.
We knew abought Houghton le Spring already. We needed to be in Stanley, Durham, and East & West Rainton so hotel was ideally situated. We used the in-house Restaurants & Bar on 3 nights and the Italian Restaurant across the road ! night.. There are bus routes outside the Hotel - I believe maximum fare of £2.00.Guest review byVictorUnited Kingdom - 2.0
The people were lovely and friendly.
The people were lovely and friendly. But, this is not and upmarket place to stay. It was full of drunks and druggies (even the taxi driver and the electrician said this) It was just like some of the worst council estates we have here in the UK. I didn't go out at night with the dog because of this. There were quite a few pit bulls around, including the one upstairs. The property itself was ok and comfortable, but left a lot to be desired. The cutlery drawer was at ground level, there were slugs on the worktop every other morning and the fridge was awkward to open - you had to shut the kitchen door to get into it! But the owner was helpful and friendly.Guest review byMarionUnited Kingdom - 10
