FAQs about hotels on Crete
Centuries of History, Days of Sunshine
The largest Greek island, mountainous Crete has stunning beaches, plenty of history and as much or little nightlife as you want. Party town Malia has many bars, clubs and restaurants on its Strip.
Along the coast is the capital Heraklion, a bustling city home to many Crete hotels on the beach, and a Venetian castle guarding its port. Its archaeological museum includes finds from the island’s Minoan era, while just inland are the Roman remains of Knossos.
Also boasting a Venetian castle is Rethymnon, a popular resort with a good number of Crete hotels with private pools on Booking.com. Loggerhead turtles nest in season on the sandy beaches here and at Chania, an important port with an attractive waterfront set against the backdrop of mountains.
On the other side of the island is Aghios Nikolaos, a small fishing town with a picturesque harbour. Just north is Elounda, a popular family resort, and offshore is Spinaloga island, inspiration behind the book ‘The Island’. Matala in the south has a bohemian vibe and intriguing cliff dwellings, while Paleokastro in the east borders Europe’s largest palm forest at Vai.
We could go on and on about magnificent Crete beaches, but whichever resort you choose, you can be almost guaranteed fantastic food and a good helping of sunshine.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,048 reviewsEverything!!!😍 To be honest places like this are over our budget,so we saved money for this trip for a while and was a bit concerned if we choose a good accomodation to put our trust in because we did not know the place. But booking this place was the best choice we could make! The hotel itself is really new, clear and elegant from the inside and outside as well. There are many pools so you do not feel the crowd (sometimes we were alone in a whole pool). The beach is literally just around the corner so we were able to spend our whole day there while our room was just few steps away from it. At the beach there were king size beds with baldachin and sunbeds too. There were a toilet and a beach bar nearby to fulfill all of yours needs! Our room was small but it was perfect for us (2 people) and it was well-equipped, we had everything we needed. There was fresh bottled water provided daily and the cleaning ladies did a perfect job! Despite the fact we brought lots of sands in they made our room perfectly clean every single day, huge thank you for them from here as well! Also the rest of the staff were extremly kind, helpful, cheerful and just made our days always :) Thank you as well, I hope my words get back to you, because you are doing an amazing job! We also tried massage here. The hotel provides you a 10 minute free massage and we also add some extra minutes. It was also amazing, we felt incredibly relaxed and calm after it. I definitely recommend you to try it once you are there. We also recieved one romantic dinner next to the beach in the hotel's fine dining restaurant from the hotel. It was an amazing night with a perfect view and incredible dishes! And in the end I would like to emphasize the amazing quality and quantity of food! Everything was freshly made, we had lots of choices and our favourites could be found every day but they also add new dishes to the breakfast and dinner too, so you just could not get bored of it!Guest review byOrsolyaHungary
- From US$242.40 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 291 reviewsOur stay was amazing. First, the hotel is simply beautiful, with stunning views of the sea and great architecture. The big swimming pool with sea water and the hotel beach were top notches. Our room with a private swimming pool was perfect for a stay with our kid. Indeed, in spite of being a luxury hotel, Amirandes is definitely a place for families. The days' schedules (meals, activities...) seem to always take into account the needs of the youngest clients. The place is also very quiet, we never had any issues for getting good sleep. The staff was always very helpful and polite. The restaurant had a great choice of food which was always pretty tasty.Guest review byJonathanSwitzerland
- From US$190 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 390 reviewsFirst I have to say I am not a resort type of person. I came for the end of school of my 15 year old son and becouse of him. He said 5/5 specially becouse of outdoor training with a fitness master and table tennis lessons and other amneties and food and room and pool and beach and hotel :) I can personally add in short.. everything here is very nice... but staff.... staff is really exceptional. On all levels. Very very kind. One of a kind experience. Uff yes, and food as well. For sure I will come back and I will reccomend Grecotel to my friend as well.Guest review byKsenja KSlovenia

Before our stay I communicated with the staff and they were great at getting things organized with quick turnarounds. They ALL speak English and are happy to help. We did a last minute car rental, available on site. Gorgeous vehicle and so convenient. The restaurant was amazing! Definitely a 5 star, great food options. Everything we ate was delicious and well made. Service was excellent. Dessert was devine! The views were excellent from our patio AND the restaurant. ..... highly recommend this place!!!Guest review byEstherMexico
- From US$127.61 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 932 reviewsWhat a fantastic hotel. Location was close to everything. Room was large, comfortable, clean, and modern. Complimentry bowl of fresh fruit, raki, and bag of peanuts. Also free toiletres. Biggest advantage undoubtably are the efficient, polite, friendly, and always smiling staff. Very good breakfast also, with a large selection of choices, including fried eggs, bacon, sausages, and even mushrooms. This should be a 4 star hotel, not 3 stars. Will definitely stY here againGuest review byAngelaMalta
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 6.8Pleasant - What previous guests thought, 760 reviewsWe booked this while we were already in Crete and didn`t checked a lot befor booking. When we arrived we were absolutely amazed! The hotel is located in an amazing spot, great views, beach, pools, restaurant and rooms. We were upgraded to a suite and it was awesome, everything clean, the staff was always nice and helpful. All inclusive is definitely worth it, we even decided to stay more days after our first booking. Definitely the place you want to stay in Crete.Guest review byMarianaMexico

Rooms with a sea view actually have a view so beautiful that photos can't do it justice. Staff very welcoming, attentive, nice and responsive at all times. Highly recommendable, the hotel is well equipped and lacks nothing, and the staff are just like all the Cretans we met: as friendly as possible.Guest review byMehdiFrance

It felt safe and there was plenty for the children and adults to do alike. It was great to see such a mix of people. Like many Cretan coastal towns and villages, Rethymno is overwhelmed by us tourists. It's distressing to walk very crowded mediaeval streets surrounded by souvenir shops. The famous bakeries are wonderful and the harbour is really beautiful. Parking has been addressed but the experience is still not pleasant. We found having a drink and a light meal on the waterfront a joyless experience, crowded area and surly service. I would recommend Rethymno for a quick visit to see the Old Town bakeries and the Harbour.Guest review byJohnAustralia - 10

Difficult to judge because we came early in the season when there was a cold wind blowing and not all the places were open. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . There were a number of apparently abandoned and ill-maintained buildings, which made the place appear less attractive.Guest review byAMELIAUnited Kingdom - 10

Not really a resort, but a working town, has a small, pretty square with a few bars and tavernas. A few good tavernas and bars down on the seafront. A lot more could be made of the beach with a little effort.Guest review byNatasha_78_1United Kingdom - 8.0

lovely holiday spot, plenty of shops and restaurants, everyone extremely friendly and helpful. About an hour from airport, went to spinalonga and did a few walks, also did the 4 hour train ride which was lovely to see mountains, bit of history etc, wasnt too hot. Both of the bays were good and safe for swimming - one of them a bit pebbly getting in, the other was fine. Supermarkets well stocked. Elounda is flat so easy for walking although pavements a little bumpy. All very accessible and walkableGuest review byAnonymous - 10
Malia is a great place for food, beaches and a good location...
Malia is a great place for food, beaches and a good location to explore some of the surrounding areas. The old town provides amazing Cretan restaurants, pretty much all good, and some, like the Avli, Getonia, Sokaki, and Brassierie are excellent. Book a table if there in the busy season. There are local palace ruins which are well worth a visit and easy to get to on the happy train, which is also an experience on its own and does various trips up to the hills as well around town and locally. If there for while definitely book some trips out on a boat, as the sea is just deliciously clean and refreshing, and if feeling adventurous take a boat to Spinalonga and have a wander among the old leper colony. If you can get up in the hills, a visit to Lasithi Plato and make sure you stop off at the restaurant Taksiarhos - where all the food is home made by Joanna, the wife of Taksiarhos who owns this place - it is a complete treat to meet both of them as have a truly authentic Cretan meal and experience. And once the cave is back open (hopefully in 2026) visit Zeus' birth place just a little further up the hill. But of course, the weather is just fab here so do enjoy the sun be it on a beach or by a pool!Guest review bySara GodfreyUnited Kingdom - 10

The old town and harbour are stunning- really picturesque with a happy, vibrant vibe, lots to see and loads of small, independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The challenge is trying to find one’s way back to any particular shop, as the Old Town is such a maze of narrow cobbled streets with quaint, pretty houses. I had been told it’s a great place to visit but it vastly exceeded my expectations.Guest review byKayUnited Kingdom
