FAQs about hotels in Salento
A Magic Southern Jewel
Comprising the south part of Italy’s Region of Puglia, the Salento peninsula is located in the ‘heel’ of the Italian ‘boot’. With an unusual and beautiful landscape, it also has traditions shaped by explorers and invaders from a variety of cultures that reached its coasts.
If Salento is a jewel, the main piece is definitely the city of Lecce. Its walled historic centre is greatly admired for the uniqueness of its Baroque style. It also has a Roman theatre and a Greek amphitheatre, both still in use. Try a hotel in Lecce’s old town and go back in time!
Blessed with the waters from the Ionian and the Adriatic seas, its rocky coves and small sandy inlets contrast with the light blue waters. Popular beach hotels in Puglia’s Salento region are located near the Alimini Lakes and the Portoselvaggio Bay.
Other important coastal areas are Porto Cesareo, Torre dell'Orso, Santa Maria di Leuca and Santa Cesarea Terme. Gallipoli and Otranto deserve a visit not only for their beaches, but also because of their beautiful historic centres, mostly shaped during the Aragonese domination of the area.

There are so many eloquent descriptions of Lecce, its...
There are so many eloquent descriptions of Lecce, its buildings, its food culture and friendly, welcoming, residents. I found them all to be accurate for the old town, but also for the more residential areas around the university where I stayed for over a week. In truth, the historical highlights, and great food could adequately be covered in 3/4 days, but the deeper wanderings around the town, enjoying the fantastic antiquity collections of Museo Sigismondo Castromediano could not be adequately enjoyed in that time. So, if you do have time, kick back a little, explore beyond the obvious and enjoy the relaxed charm on offer. Restaurants filled with different takes on classics, or into the traditional family filled eateries which abound outside the centre. A lovely place!Guest review byFooclanUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Ostuni is an ideal base to explore the surrounding towns such as Alberobello, Locorodondo and Cisternino, and the beaches are nearby. Ostuni is a busy tourist destination with many restaurants, bars and historical sights to discover.Guest review byPaulIreland - 10.0
Amazing city. So many good restaurants.
Amazing city. So many good restaurants. Churches all so beautiful. Felt very safe there too. Easy to get around. Quaint old town with cobbled streets, lively fish markets and stunning beaches. Gallipoli definitely offers a unique mix of relaxation and adventure.Guest review byAngie BaptistUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Lovely. Beautiful beaches and great swimming spots.
Lovely. Beautiful beaches and great swimming spots. Beautiful old town with loads of restaurant options. Great base to explore the area from. Highly recommended. Definitely worth having a car though to get out to the beaches nearby such as Laghi Alimini. Lots of little beaches and rocky swimming spots nearby along the coast.Guest review byFionaUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Laid back seaside town.
Laid back seaside town. Cafe Mada near the station serves beautiful baked snacks (peanut free) and quality coffee at good prices. The Appian Way columns were an impressive sight. We missed out on walking along the main promenade which looks a nice thing to do.Guest review bysallyUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Nice beaches, plenty of fast food vendors, or dine-in restaurants if you prefer. Beaches were very clean, and locals very helpful. Prices were very reasonable too, with local shops providing local produce. For a real treat, try Cosimino Restaurant on Via Cosimo Albano; you can book a table overlooking the sea - its great food, and a fabulous atmosphere. It was not a noisy resort, in fact, we thought it was quiet, however, on weekends there was live music after dark. If you are planning a stay, Porto Cesareo is the perfect place to unwind and capture some Italian sunshine.Guest review byJeffUnited Kingdom - 4.0
I wouldn't rush back to Taranto.
I wouldn't rush back to Taranto. The modern town is very built up and feels a bit poor/run-down -- imagine a slightly more upmarket Naples. The old town is very dilapidated once you head away from the castle. Parts are totally derelict with more stray cats that human inhabitants. We chose Taranto as a base to explore Alberobello, Locorotondo and Matera, but would have been better staying somewhere more central.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10.0

A truly beautiful place, so much to see and some great restaurants. The museums, churches, architecture all beautiful. I would say three days would be ideal, an excellent place for a short break. Traffic into the old town is restricted across the middle opf the day, which enhances the appeal.Guest review bySueUnited Kingdom - 10.0
The water is something else! We could not get enough of it.
The water is something else! We could not get enough of it. It is so clear, the color varies from emerald to turquoise blue, indescribable. Highly recommended, one of the best places in Italy for a seaside vacation. Delicious fresh seafood adds to a great experience. Pescheria 3.0 was a great place to visit for fresh seafood, also Orchidea Marina or Da Mimi (reservations are highly recommended). We enjoyed the beach at Salinas within a 10-min drive from Torre Lapillo.Guest review byIryna ArtsyshevskaUnited States - 8.0

Cisternino itself is a very lovely cittadina and ideally placed to visit all the towns around such as Ostuni, Ceglie M, Alberobello (although this is like Disneyland), Locorotondo, M. Franca, Monopoli and Putignano, or even Bari. It's also not far from Salento which I combined with this trip and did Lecce, Otranto, Oria, Gallipoli, Castro, S. Maria di Leuca. It is also only just over an hour to Matera which should not be missed and a unique town very much worth the time and kms. There are plenty of restaurants in Cisternino and for your morning coffee e brioche don't miss going to Vignola History or visit the panificio Vignola for a delicious freshly made panino and other treats that will put plenty of padding on the hips.Guest review byElisabethUnited Kingdom
