- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 64 reviewsThe whole stay was very relaxing. The staff made a lot of effort and were always helpful. We used the free shuttle service four times in total (from an to Hashimoto Station and from an to Koyasan area). It takes about 20 minutes by car from Hashimoto Station to get to the hotel. The breakfast was traditional Japanese and we enjoyed it very much. The quantity was more than sufficient and the food varied a little every day, which we really liked. The dinner was also very tasty. The size of the accommodation was more than sufficient and above average what we are used to in Japan. We lacked nothing.Guest review byNataschaGermany
- From US$90.15 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 6.7Pleasant - What previous guests thought, 126 reviewsFew minutes walk from the train station. And there are many buses from the train station to the attractions. Staff are excellent and always doing their best to serve. Room rate is reasonable and the public bath is a bonus. Mini mart, small restaurant and the laundromat are all in the same building.Guest review byMelvin Zachary Liang LoonSingapore
- From US$288.63 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,829 reviewsI stayed in a JP NisshoKan room which was spacious and comfortable, with incredible ocean views. The cave onsen were striking, with free-flowing healing mineral water, and the breakfast buffet was excellent. Be sure to go up to the observatory on the top of the hotel for sunset or sunrise views.Guest review byScottFrance

Same with the traditional breakfast. It doesn't get any more authentically Japanese than this, anywhere you go, quintessentially Japanese!Guest review byAndreaJapan

The scenic mountains near the city offers stunning sunset views. The Sakura were in full bloom. There are several parks around the city, and the impressive Wakayama castle. The hotel (Candeo Hotels Nankai) is great value - fantastic river views, rooftop onsen that you can enjoy the sunset. And right at the Wakayama Station. Good dining options around the hotel too.Guest review byKwokSingapore - 10.0

We are Americans so we had really little knowledge of Shirahama as a resort city. It was at the tail end of a 3 week tour of Japan and was very restful. Fortunately, we were there after Golden Week and before the main tourist season, so it was quiet and relaxing. We had fun over two nights at a local Turkish restaurant, Blue Bar. We'd recommend it. Also, the beach seemed quite nice although we had one day or rain so we didn't hang out there. While this wouldn't be a regular stop for Americans, I think it is worthwhile and an easy train ride to the airport in Osaka.Guest review byAndrew - 10.0

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.Guest review byDimitraJapan - 10.0

Hongu, Watarase, Kawayu & the surrounding area is hands down one of THE almighty best in Japan — and Japan has lots of amazing places. it's very easy to spend 3 days or more based out of this area & then driving around to amazing waterfalls, ravines, hot springs, cultural spots, mountain vistas, abandoned elementary school, etc. etc. unbeaten japan can take you there so do not hesitate to reach out.Guest review bylawrence of osakaJapan - 10.0

I spent one night in Kii-Katsuura after walking the Kumano Koda Daimon-Zaka section up to the Nachisan shrine and waterfall. It is a four hour train ride from Osaka but we’ll worth it to see this beautiful area in Japan. Just to warn you, the iconic red pagoda near the waterfall is currently being restored and is covered in tarpaulin until early next year. Katsuura is a sleepy fishing and onsen town. Visit the fishery on the port at 7am to see the daily tuna auction. A great experience is bathing in the cave onsen at Hotel Urashima on an Island five minutes by ferry from Katsuura.Guest review byAnonymousAustralia - 8.0

Shingu is a small coastal town with few hills which is a wonderful to find after 10 days hiking on the mountainous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walks. One of the 3 Great Shrines is here and very accessible whether walking or driving. Getting to and from Shingu is very easy with the train station and bus station being together in the center of town. It is a good base for reaching the other 2 Great Shrines of the Kumano Kodo at Hongu and Nachisan. There are a number of good eateries in the town but one of the joys was just wandering down laneways and discovering little gems not listed in the usual guides.Guest review byJimAustralia - 10.0

This is a very peaceful little town on the southeast coast of Kii Peninsula. The residents and store clerks are mostly senior citizens but they are polite and pleasant to meet. It’s the gateway to the Nashi area and the famous Kumano Kodo historical trail. You can also rent a bike at the Information Center next to the JR Kii Katsuura Station to quickly circle around town.Guest review byKuangYuTaiwan - 8.0

Wakayama has a wonderful castle and museum that was sparsely attended. It was a nice change to have the place to yourself so you could take your time at the exhibits. We chose to come here as the city was close to Kansai Airport for our return flight. We did not explore the regional trails which I believe are wonderful. If only visiting the city, a stay of 2 days is sufficient.Guest review byBlatchfordAustralia
