We loved everything! The place, the surroundings, the atmosphere, and moreover Anushka and his family. If you're looking for authenticity, simplicity and exceptional human relationships you'll be at the right place. Anushka is a perfect driver and guide. He picked us up at the airport with a van as we were traveling with our 3 kids and drove us to his house where we stayed for 5 days. We felt immediately at home and spent wonderful moments all together. Anushka brought us to amazing places, temple on top of a mountain with perfect view, river to have a bath every evening, tea factory, Ayurveda botanical garden, restaurant near waterfalls, and a place where we spent a perfect time with elephants, having a ride with them, washing them in the river and giving them some food. Such an amazing experience! He also waited for us in Nanu Oya train station to bring us back to his home after an unforgettable train journey to see the tea plantations. Always ready to make us discover new things, exotic fruits we could buy on our way, animals like monkeys, porcupine, giant lizards and giant bats, answering all questions and so interesting when speaking about his country. He can arrange you any tour you'd like to discover Sri Lanka, always helpful and reactive, you can trust him for everything. And what we loved the most are the precious moments we spent with his family. They are all wonderful people we'll stay in contact with for sure. For those who don't speak English good to know that his sister speaks perfectly French ( she's a teacher) and she's also super friendly and interesting. We spent unbelievable evenings all together, singing loud, and dancing, and having BBQ party. After a long flight from The Netherlands we wanted to get out of colombo and went straight here. Very nice breakfast, lunch and dinner. Keep in mind that you're off the main road and are not close to any shop. Relaxation is key here. Pinnawala basically has 4 main attractions therefore a maximum of 2 days is sufficient. The main attraction is the elephant orphanage. Related to that is the elephant bathing at the nearby river which is fascinating. Remember the ticket you purchase for the orphanage is required for the bathing so do both in the same day as the tickets technically only valid for the day (we did not know this so we went to the orphanage in the evening and went to see the bathing the next day.. however the kind ticket officers let us go). Then there is a mini zoo where animals roam in more space than usual. You can feed animals here which could be fascinating (for a small fee). Spectacular area to get up and close with elephants. Unique experience with elephants walking thru the village for their daily bathing. General accommodation facilities were good.
