I recommend travelling outside the main holiday periods, as Porto has been discovered by many world tourists! Take the train from the wonderful Sao Bento station along the Douro river. The most scenic part is the final hour between Pinhao and Pocinho which is stunning. Boat trips along the river with views of the six bridges and the ancient boats that carried the wine barrels are very enjoyable, and a visit to the amazing central market is a must! Walk round with a glass of wine and choose items to take to a table to enjoy. Children would also love a return trip on the cable car, which is close to the wine caves. We liked the bed (a king size bed made of 2 twin beds): very good mattresses, very nice sheets. The location is excellent: in a quiet part of Vila Nova de Gaia, a 10-15 minute walk to the metro, Jardim do Morro, the river front, the wine cellars and supermarkets. Bring your best running shoes and train your calves before coming! The apt. M, the one with the balcony on the front and the church-like window, is on the top floor, accessible by elevator. It’s a good size for a couple. The kitchen has everything to cook a simple meal. There is a secure luggage storage in the lobby, very convenient. This place gets a well-deserved 5 stars—no doubt about it! From the moment we walked in, it felt warm, cozy, and totally like home. It’s huge, sparkling clean, and honestly… it looks even better than in the photos (and that’s saying something!). Usually with apartments that look this good, you think: “Yeah right, too good to be true.” But nope—this one actually turned out to be better than too good! It’s got everything. And I mean everything: coffee machine, iron, washing machine, dishwasher… you name it, it’s there—and all in tip-top shape. We were just the two of us, but there’s more than enough space for 4 or even 6 people to hang out comfortably. And the view… wow. Just wow. Need a room with a view? There are many good restaurants in the area. I had returned from a holiday in the UK and needed to stay near the airport as it was a night time arrival. The suites are just a 5 minute walk from the airport, and also very close to a metro station for getting into Porto. I stayed in a different apartment the night before my trip, however, I wish I had known about these suites as I would also have stayed here the night before my outward journey. Conveniently located is an excellent, traditional Portuguese restaurant just along the street. Big portions, friendly staff - some speak English - and very inexpensive. The rooms are more than what you need, and the shared kitchen area with complementary breakfast are an added bonus. It is also possible to cook in the kitchen as there is a cooker and fridge. How can the city approve building a new hotel without either a designated parking lot or underground parking? And: The hotel accepts small pets. A good thing!
