A few miles from the Belgian border, Lille displays Flemish influence in both architecture and cuisine. Its most famous square - Grand Place - is home to the beautiful Vielle Borse building, the Lille Christmas markets and several restaurants serving moules-frites and local beer.
Behind that is the Palais Rihour, a rather odd-looking building surrounded by cafes. In the opposite direction is another square with the opera house at the centre and triangular-shaped buildings fanning off in 3 directions. One of these cobbled streets leads to the Old Town, where boutiques and international brands are in beautifully crafted shops.
Shopping in Lille is actually epic. It has Europe’s largest bookstore (the 8-floor Furet du Nord) and largest flea market - the Braderie de Lille. Then there is the bustling Wazemmes market and the huge Euralille shopping centre. The town also has some fantastic chocolate shops.
Other attractions include the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the Citadelle – a 17th-century fortress surrounded by a free zoo and gardens.
Lesquin Airport is on the city’s outskirts, but most visitors arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, named after Lille’s most famous son. If travelling to Lille by Eurostar, check out the mural of famous European landmarks before heading to your Booking.com hotel, B&B or apartment.

We got the Eurostar from London in standard premiere. Very nice trip and friendly staff.
Lille is easy to get around. We got a 48 hour pass, for bus, train and tram. Cheaper than in London
You must try HEIN Brique House restaurant. The food is delicious (chicken with Maroilles sauce, bavette, carbonade, and much more).
Many restaurants on Grand Place.
Pity the fountain was not working and there was no water in it.
We ate moules/frites on the first day with lovely desserts.
People are very friendly, bus drivers, staff in restaurants and shops...
We really enjoyed our trip to Lille.

Our trip started on a bad foot as most of the city was closed for the celebration of the 8th May but then, it started to blossom in the afternoon and streets started to become crowded with people.
I recommend to spend most of the time in the old town where most shops are located and where many small cafes are located. You can find many award-winning restaurant in that part and they are very close one another. I recommend tasting the pastries of Dona Bica and Les Merveilleux de Fred. I would recommend to skip the breakfast at whatever hotel and going to a local bakery for some fresh bread. Beware the coffee, I had a hard time finding a decent one, they all tasted much bitter than what I'm used to.
The Citadel is a nice place for a stroll and some quietness. We didn't have the time to visit the Museum of Fine Arts.
Pack a good pair of walking shoes because you will be walking a lot in the city center. You can buy a day pass to use every transportation system for 5.5€. There are bicycles available but there was a deposit system that I wasn't very fond of so I skipped that part, otherwise it is 1.8€ for 24h (but 200€ security deposit).

What is good is the fact that the two mainline stations are so close, very easy walking distance apart, approx 15 mins. I really enjoyed walking around, I must of walked 4 - 5 hrs on the day I arrived, after of course having had a shower and few moments rest on my bed. I'd encourage any first timer to France to go, my French is almost none existent, I learnt it, or didn't learn it at a very poor school many years ago, when we had to translate straight from French to Welsh, and my Welsh was not brilliant, we also had a teacher like a bear with a sore head, so I only did one year; still I got by and was understood on a good number of occasions.

Beautiful architecture, compact and easily explored by foot, very flat too. Fantastic food options. I was surprised to find shops closed on Sunday though, fortunately the Palais des Beaux Arts was open and free to enter.
The hotel is located in the city center, so you can walk everywhere which is really nice. The breakfast at the hotel is decent, and the staff was very friendly. Despite being in France there was one staff member who spoke a bit of Dutch, which was appreciated. I would recommend this hotel if you want to visit the city center of Lille.
You cannot reserve a parking spot at the hotel, but you can park at the Lille Grand Palais, which is a 5 minute walk to the hotel, and has easy access to the highway.
This hotel is in a beautifully restored historic building, but the interior is very modern and functional. The area is some distance away from the city centre but it's a nice area and some of the Lille's best museums and restaurants are right round the corner. We didn't have breakfast in our rate, but we were able to order a 'half breakfast' to take to our room (juice, coffee, pastry) which at 6 euros was pretty good value. Lovely staff too.
This is a terrible hotel with rude, unhelpful and disrespectful staff members. They charged us twice for our room and refused to give us a refund even though it was due to the fault of an incompetent member of staff who could not speak or understand English. Also, we would not recommend this hotel as it is within the ‘red light district’ of Lille and on many occasions we passed ladies of the night on our walk home from the city centre.
Excellent! Our lovely room was very clean, with a very comfortable bed and bed linen. Good shower! The breakfast was the best we had in France. Cecile and Michel take a lot of trouble to ensure their guests are happy; they are very welcoming and friendly and gave us lots of information about Lille. The location is excellent, on the edge of Old Lille. We hope to return!
We traveled on a budget for business and needed a place with parking outside of the city center. We didn't spend too much time on the premises but our room was very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. Best part of the stay was after a long day, being able to hang in the back patio, eating the delicious pizza made on site and drinking a local beer.
The staff, including the cleaners, were friendly. They kindly answered about our requests. The hotel is located next to Lille Flandres station, yet close to the city centre, so the location is excellent for train travelers. The building is old, but the room was nicely maintained. No surprises when you expect a no-nonsense hotel for one night.
The hotel was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. It is very close to the two main railway stations and also to the city centre of Lille. The breakfasts were basic continental but were still good.
The bathroom was small but very good, clean and adequate for our needs with plenty of hot water and a good shower.
The appartment was very clean en big enough for a family of four. The beds were very good, our kids liked the sleeping couch and the bed was big and one of the best i ever had in a hotel.
Breakfast had more variety than expected, our kids loved it.
The hotel is a 20 minute walk from lille centre.
The hotel is centrally located, just between two main rail stations and the shopping centre. Ideal for a short stay if you're taking a day in Lille or changing trains. Metro stop is also just outside. My room was ready for an early check-in and I didn't have to store my luggage before 15:00.
Seriously, this is one of the best hotels I have booked. Ambiance is perfect. The room is lovely, large, comfortable, clean, warm and with a beautiful view. 5-10mins walk to the center and nice bars or restaurants. Breakfast was peaceful, with a nice view and appretizing.
Great location in the centre of Lille. Apartment was spacious and clean. Easy to access the city. Good facilities in the apartment and lovely open windows to the streets below to enjoy the atmosphere. There are a couple of bars across the street.
Proximity to Lille Europe and the fact that it was a small hotel and not a huge corporate high rise. Very close to the Centre Ville - Lille is a very pleasant town, with some lovely historical buildings. Nice firm mattress.
Great location. Staff very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Room spacious and spotless. Really enjoyed our stop at the hotel. Short distance from Eurostar station. On the edge of Lille old town so everything a short walk.
The staff was so very friendly which I didn't expect from a budget hotel near the station. The room was a little small but extremely good value nevertheless. Incredibly convenient for both Lille stations and the old town.
Nice hotel in a quiet area, but only 10 minutes of walking to Lille Flandres railway station.
Room was OK, the bed was comfortable, and breakfast was tasty with freshly baked bread and pastries
The hotel has retained its character and charm from the '50s and '60s. Quaint and comfortable. Its central location in the old town is ideal for walking to interesting sites.
The hotel offered good value for money and was walking distance to the main exhibition centre. The room was relatively clean and quiet with little to no noise disturbance.
