Archontiko is a very special place to stay from the adventurous climb up the mountain, the lovely hamlet and the wonderful welcome from Marie and George. From the minute we arrived we felt so at home. Marie provided us with lots of information booklets and maps to help in our touring. We arrived to beautiful mountain tea (delicious) and cake and cherries from the tree. The smell of jasmine was fabulous on the terrace. We had dinner on 2 of our three nights there and it was fabulous. Home cooking at its best, thank you Marie! The breakfast is buffet of fruit, yoghurt, honey, home made preserves, omelet, fried bread and other local delights. Freshly squeezed orange juice was beautiful, thanks George. George also entertained us with Greek music (he plays several instruments and sings), thanks George. Stephanie was there helping with dinner in the evening and was so kind, we enjoyed our chats! If you are travelling to the Peloponnese definitely include Archontiko in your plans. Marie is fluent in English and French and George offers guiding to those keen on hiking which is definitely the thing to do here.

Hotel Byzantion is located down the road to the Byzantine town of Mistras, a short drive from the Archaeological Site. It features rooms with spectacular views of ancient Mistras and Mount Taygetos.

We really like the staff. The went out of the way to help us. We had a bike parked and they noticed that it was laying on the side. So the staff came along and picked it up, which required 4 people. Then they secured the gear which was falling off. When we arrived we thanked them and ask if they could have a look on the surveillance camera to see if somebody did knock the bike over. They did so in the morning and it turned out that a gale force wind did throw the bike over. We liked as well the close proximity to the museum, you could walk a drive for 4 min. as well that the restaurants a coffees were just in front of the hotel. Last but not least, we liked to pool for a dip, since this summer was extremly hot, particular when riding motorcycles .

I was here for the Spartan Race, the hotel is located about 40min from Sparti, the first half drive is on plane road, the second part is going uphill till the top of the mountain where you will find the hotel. The road is in good condition and don't require anything special. It's really in the middle of nowhere but what a crazy place! You can see all the mountains around, there is an incredible silence and sense of peace which is really hard to find somewhere else. The structure is basically new, it's builted in solid stones and the wall are almost 40cm thick, so perfectly sound proof. The owner George is extremely skilled chef, I really recommend you to have dinner in the hotel and try his wonderful dishes. His also very gentle and helpful with the guest. In those days we were all guests for the race and he wake up earlier just to prepare us breakfast early and allow to eat before the race...what else to say? Go there and enjoy, you will never regret!!
