A 1000 year-old Buddhist temple, Shukubo Koya-san Eko-in offers Japanese-style accommodation, a beautiful garden and free WiFi. Guests are free to attend Buddhist morning services, the Goma fire ritual and meditation. Just beautiful. The temple is gorgeous and serene. We had the family room with a private bathroom which was clean and a good size for our family. The dinner was perfection and one of the best meals we had in Japan. We wish we had booked for longer.

Offering a garden and garden view, 高野山 宿坊 龍泉院 -Koyasan Shukubo Ryusenin- is set in Koyasan, 45 km from Matsushita Park and 47 km from Kii Fudoki No Oka Museum of Archaeology and Folklore. Offering free private parking, the 3-star ryokan is 38 km from Kishi Station. Subaru Hall is 48 km away and Jigenin Temple is 49 km from the ryokan. It was a true temple stay and quite traditional so a great experience to remember. The rooms were quite spacious and comfortable including cushions and low table to sit at as well as comfy lounge chairs and coffee table for sitting options. When we went to dinner the monks came in and prepared the futons for the night and when we went to breakfast they came in and packed up bedding to return room to day configuration. The meals were beautiful vegetarian cuisine, nutritious and beautifully presented in private dining rooms, both dinner and breakfast. We went to the early morning prayer ceremony which was a lovely experience. Just 6 or 7 couples where we listened to chanting and the monks prayed for the wellbeing of the world.

Located in the sacred Mount Koya area, 高野山 宿坊 桜池院 -Koyasan Shukubo Yochiin- is a historic temple and an accommodation for visitors. Just to the left of entering sanmon gate, there is a stone garden created by the famous Mirei Shigemori and designated a natural monument by the Japanese government. Loved our stay here! The room was newly renovated. Clean, modern, and really comfortable. Having our own bathroom was a nice bonus, and everything felt fresh and well taken care of.

Located in the sacred Koyasan area, Saizenin offers simple accommodation surrounded by mountains and many temples. Originally developed as a lodging for the temples’ pilgrims, it conducts Buddhist services every morning that guests can attend. Nankai Koyasan Train Station is a 15-minute drive away. It was the best food that I ate in Japan. Monks living in Shukubo Saizenin really know how to cook.
